As part of the preparation for the upcoming research trip, an online seminar titled "Memory Culture in the Baltic States – From the Soviet Era to Today" recently took place with Dr. Didzis Bērziņš from the University of Latvia. The event offered valuable insights into how Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have dealt with the legacies of National Socialist crimes, the Holocaust, and the Soviet occupation. Dr. Bērziņš provided historical context and highlighted current debates around remembrance and historical responsibility in the region.
Participants had the opportunity to reflect on the challenges of shaping collective memory and the role of remembrance in building national identity and ethical awareness. His talk illustrated the diverse—and at times contested—approaches to memory culture in the three countries, ranging from official commemoration practices to civic engagement.
The lecture served as a meaningful starting point for engaging with the historical themes that will be explored further during the educational trip.
